James John Liautaud (born January 12th 1964) is the former chairman and founder of Jimmy John’s sandwich chain.
When Liautaud finished secondary school, in the year 1982, his dad gave him an amount of $25,000 in order to start a business, under the condition that, if the company was unsuccessful, he would join as a soldier in the US Army. Even though his father wanted him to join, he opted to lend the money in exchange for the right to own 48% of the company. At first, Jimmy John wanted to open an ice cream stand, but after visiting several similar stands throughout in the heat of summer 1982, he came to the conclusion that $25,000 wasn’t enough to fund the venture. After an encounter with an eatery selling sandwiches, Jimmy John realized that he could set up a sandwich store within his budget by buying premium meats from an area market, and then baking the bread himself. With the assistance of his family members as tasters, he chose to include four sandwiches on the menu he had originally. The 13th of January 1983 was the day that Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches launched at Charleston, Illinois. Because of the place of his initial establishment, Liautaud decided to include the delivery of his sandwiches in order to increase sales. The first step was to deliver samples to people who lived near the Eastern Illinois University dorms. After the close of the one-year period, the establishment began earning a profit. After the close of the second year, Liautaud was able purchase his father’s shares in the company and became the sole owner. The company continued to expand and he was able open his third and second shops in 1987 and 1986.
In 2003, he was named to Chicago’s “40 Under 40” by Crain’s Chicago Business.
